There’s a movement sweeping the Church called the New Evangelical Movement. It actually has been around for awhile, but has changed names several times and has become more prevalent in recent days. Pastors and teachers are not just twisting the truth, they’ve fallen off the cliff. And thousands are following.

We shouldn’t be surprised because we were told these things would happen: “But there will be prophets in Israel, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will cleverly teach destructive heresies and even deny the Master who bought them…Many will follow their evil teaching and shameful immorality. And because of these teachers, the way of truth will be slandered” (2 Peter 2:1-2).

So what are they teaching? In a nutshell, they are dismantling the Bible They are simply saying the Bible is not reliable and it doesn’t make sense, so why bother with it?

Let’s look at some of their teachings. What is false and what is TRUE?

False: The Bible is not authoritative
TRUE: The Bible is God’s Word

These teachers are teaching that the Word of God is just a bunch of manuscripts thrown together and since it was written and copied by many people down through the ages, there is no way it’s God’s Word. They say that the Bible was created by Christians.

Here’s what the Bible says:

2 Timothy 3:16: All Scripture is inspired by God…

2 Peter 1:20-21: Above all, you must realize that no prophesy in Scripture ever came from the prophet’s own understanding, or from human initiative. No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God.

Hence, the Bible is God’s final Word! He spoke it into existence. We need to hold it high, study it, and do what it says.

False: The Bible is not accurate
TRUE: The Bible is without error

These teachers teach that there is no way the Bible can be completely true because too many people down through the ages had their hand in translating and copying it. People are beginning to believe that young people in the church are running for the door because the Bible scares them, and that many won’t step foot into the church because the Book they use is ancient and not relevant for today. They discount many of the stories in the Old Testament.

Here’s what the Bible says…

Matthew 5:18: I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved.

Proverbs 30:5: Every word of God proves true.

False: Love and tolerance outside of truth
TRUE: Love and tolerance inside the context of truth

They teach that everyone is welcome and they believe the Church needs to be tolerant of where people are at. No matter who they are or their lifestyle, they are welcome to serve in the church. There is no mention of sin and of helping people get free from their sin. They simply can choose how they want to live and the church should not stand in their way.

One of the most important doctrines in Scripture is sin. When Jesus set the woman caught in adultery free from her accusers in John 8, He said to her, “Go and sin no more” (John 8:11). Deliverance from sin is what sets people free. Sin separates us from God. Yes, we are to love others and be tolerant, but always within the context of truth. We should always point them to Jesus and help them to freedom.

False: Doctrine is not important
TRUE: Doctrine is absolutely important

Because the Bible has lost its credibility with these teachers, they replace Bible study with music, rituals, feelings and experiences. They simply do not disciple in the Word of God.

Here’s what the Bible says…

2 Timothy 3:16-17: “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”

Psalm 19:7-8: “The instructions of the Lord are perfect, reviving the soul. The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The commandments of the Lord are right, bringing joy to the heart…”

So let me ask: without the doctrine of the Bible, how would we know Jesus, how would we understand the workings of the Holy Spirit, how would we know how to live God’s ways, and how would we know God’s purpose? We need to study the Word of God.

False: Jesus can be taken out of the Bible
TRUE: Jesus is the WORD

These teachers believe that just the resurrection of Jesus Christ alone is the foundation of our faith and we need to listen to His Words because He predicted His own death and resurrection. Jesus is the One who props up our faith, not the Bible. Therefore, Jesus can be separated from the Bible.

Here’s what the Bible says…

John 1:1, 14: “In the Beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. So the Word became human and made his home among us.”

Hence, Jesus IS the WORD!! So if this is true, then how can we separate the two?

I hope you see how dangerous this teaching is. And believe me, it is very prevalent in the church. Just remember these words Jesus spoke: “Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves” (Matthew 7:15).
